MermaidHard water rappels into my lungs. A placid pool explodes, revealing a veined, weak, gasping me. My skin abruptly retreats into the comfort of beige. My lungs gorge on oxygen. Meanwhile my mind is in the water; still admiring algae, and plotting how to grow gills. I dream in the lukewarm spring about reflective dragon scales, and how they would accentuate my body’s curves. My mind takes another step into imagination, gushing over beta fish fins and blue hair. I devour air that sinks into my diaphragm. My throat cracks into a jagged scream.Mermaid

A morning alarm sounds, and the tranquil scene bursts with energy. Kids fly from the doors. Authoritarians watch slyly for young instigators in the comfort of their classrooms.
